Great job Chris!! http://scores.espn.go.com/nhl/recap?gameId=400465757

NEW YORK — Chris Kreider proudly wore the Broadway Hat in the victorious New York Rangers dressing room as he tried to describe the feeling of saving his team’s season.

Kreider deftly steered in a pass from Rick Nash 7:03 into overtime, and the Rangers stayed alive in the Stanley Cup playoffs with a 4-3 victory over the Boston Bruins on Thursday night.

“It is so surreal,” the 22-year-old Kreider said. “It’s not something that can really be explained. It is something that just has to be felt, but it was awesome. I’m just excited to give these guys an opportunity to play another game.

“There is no quit in this room.”

New York, which erased 2-0 and 3-2 deficits, still trails the Eastern Conference semifinal series 3-1.

The Rangers will need to win again on Saturday in Boston to force a Game 6 back in Madison Square Garden.

The Rangers, outshot 40-32, won a faceoff deep in their zone, and Nash rushed the puck up ice. He stopped above the right circle and fed a hard pass in front that Kreider skated into and tipped past goalie Tuukka Rask for his first of the playoffs.

New York, 0-3 in overtime in these playoffs, was eliminated from the conference finals last year by New Jersey in extra time in Game 6.

“It is time for us to win an overtime game,” Rangers goalie Henrik Lundqvist said. “This was a big one. It was such a great feeling to see that puck go in.”

Kreider, who made his NHL debut in last year’s playoffs, has six career postseason goals in just 25 games.

“I was lucky enough to play with Rick,” Kreider said. “Just trying to go hard to the net. He’s such a talented player. He was able to find my tape, and I tried to put it on net.”

Kyle has been skating with Coach V since he was 6 years old and continues to do so today!

We at PVPDH would like to think we had a small influence on shaping him as a person. We are proud of Kyle, great kid!!!

Kyle Murphy Named 2013 Derek Hines Unsung Hero Award Winner

The accolade strives to honor college hockey’s consummate team player and team builder.

April 12, 2013

PITTSBURGH, Pa. –

Providence College men’s hockey senior Kyle Murphy (Fairhaven, N.J.) was named the 2013 Derek Hines Unsung Hero Award Winner, as announced by the Hockey Commissioners Association (HCA) in Pittsburgh, Pa.

The award was established by the HCA in honor of former Army player Derek Hines, who was a “consummate team player and team builder.” Hines played at Army from 1999-2003 and was a four-year letter-winner as well as a co-captain his senior season. He was killed in the line of duty on Sept. 1, 2005 in Afghanistan.

“I am extremely honored and deeply humbled to accept the Derek Hines Unsung Hero Award,” Murphy said. “Derek was a great hockey player but, more importantly, he was an extraordinary person. Derek’s infectious personality, natural leadership ability and genuine spirit truly embody the perfect teammate and I will strive each day to live my own life as Derek so selflessly lived his.”

“Kyle has been extremely influential over the last two years in turning this program into a top-four program in Hockey East this season, bringing all the attributes of a winner to the team,” Head Coach Nate Leaman said.

After leaving the University of Notre Dame, where he proved to be an exceptional student and also played 17 games during the 2009-10 season, Murphy decided to play for the Vernon Vipers of the BCHL. He also took classes at a local college to remain on track to graduate once he returned to the college level. He took 36 credit hours in order to graduate with an Associate’s degree while helping the Vipers to the 2011 BCHL Championship. Through the championship run, he remained on top of his studies and earned an ‘A’ in every course he took.

Murphy then chose to attend Providence College with then first-year Head Coach Nate Leaman. Before the 2011-12 season, word came from the NCAA that even though he excelled while taking a heavy course load while with the Vipers, Murphy was ruled a partial qualifier and only allowed to participate in Friar practices for the season.

The adversity did not deter Murphy, who was often cited by Leaman as the hardest day-in and day-out worker in practice. Murphy’s work ethic and leadership was so persistent throughout the 2011-12 season that before the 2012-13 season – without having played a game for the Friars – Murphy was named the team captain.

“Kyle brings excellent character and he is one the best leaders I have been fortunate enough to coach,” Leaman added. “The hardest thing you are trying to do when you take over a program is to build a winning culture and having Kyle as the leader of the program within the locker room enabled us to do that very quickly here. Showing everyone how we want to represent our program on and off the ice in terms of work ethic and the grit and determination it takes to win games.”

Murphy’s leadership and contagious work ethic was part of the reason the 2012-13 Friars – with the second-most freshmen in the country (13) – entered the last weekend of the regular season in contention for the Hockey East title for the first time ever. Murphy and the Friars went on to earn home ice for the Hockey East Quarterfinals (for the first time in 10 seasons) and advanced to the Hockey East Championship Semifinals for the second consecutive season.

With three goals and eight assists, Murphy was also a contributor to a balanced Friar offense that saw 15 players notch at least 11 points on the year. Two of his three goals were game-winning tallies, including the deciding goal in PC’s 6-5 win at No. 3 UNH on Jan. 19 – Providence’s first win at the Whittemore Center since 2004. Murphy was also one of PC’s key face-off takers and penalty killers. He finished the year with 44 blocked shots to lead the team.

“I want to thank the Hines Family and the Derek Hines Fund for their tireless work to honor Derek’s legacy by supporting the brave men and women of our military,” Murphy added. “I also want to thank Coach Leaman, his staff, and all of my teammates at Providence College for the incredible experience that I have enjoyed these past two years. I am truly grateful to have been chosen for this award from among so many talented student-athletes.”

A product of Shattuck St. Mary’s, Murphy will graduate this spring from Providence College with a BS in finance. A 2012 Hockey East All-Academic team selection, he also played an integral role in the team’s drafting of then seven-year old Kevin Rich through Team IMPACT. Throughout the season, Murphy and the Friars included Kevin, who is battling Leukemia, in team events and welcomed him to the locker rooms after games. They also visited Kevin on Halloween, his birthday and took him to the AHL All-Star game at the Dunkin Donuts Center.

The Hockey Commissioners Association coordinates the honor. Each of the six hockey conferences nominates a player to a national ballot. From there, sports information directors from each conference vote on a winner, “who displays exemplary sportsmanship, is supremely competitive, intelligent and extraordinarily conditioned with an unmatched work ethic. The contributions of this individual, on and off the ice, cannot be measured by statistics alone.”

ATLANTIC CITY, NY – Sophomore forward Max Novak scored two goals and junior goaltender Troy Grosenick made 32 saves to lead the Union College men’s hockey team to a 3-1 victory over Brown and the 2013 ECAC Championship at Boardwalk Hall. Union also receives the Whitelaw Cup for the second straight season.

Union (21-12-5) became the first school since St. Lawrence in 2000-01 to win back-to-back ECAC Hockey Championships. The Dutchmen received the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA Division I Championships, the third straight NCAA appearance. The field will be announced Sunday night at 9 p.m. live on ESPNU, and information will be posted at UnionAthletics.com. Brown finishes with an overall record of 16-14-6.

The teams had combined for just five shots on goal through the first 10 plus minutes of the period. At 2:06, Brown’s Dennis Robertson had a shot from the left point almost tipped in by a teammate. Union was held to one shot through 10:17. The second shot came at 10:18. That shot came from Daniel Carr and found twine for a 1-0 Dutchmen lead. Sebastian Gingras’s shot from the point was stopped by Bear netiminder Anthony Borelli, but the rebound came to Josh Jooris, who fed across the crease to Carr. Carr deked and tucked in his 16th of the season.

Borelli made a nice left pad stop on Max Novak, who broke in and was denied by the left pad of the Brown goalie. In the final two minutes, Troy Grosenick made a quick right pad save off a close shot from Jeff Ryan.

The Dutchmen made it 2-0 with just 13.2 seconds remaining in the second period. Novak notched his eighth of the season after passes from Matt Hatch and Kevin Sullivan and fired from between the circles. It was a high quick shot that went off the crossbar and high to the blocker of the Bear goalie. Brown outshot Union, 10-7 in the period.

The Dutchmen came out flying in the second with four straight shots. The fourth made it 3-0 on Novak’s second of the night. After pressure from the point and assists from Greg Coburn and Kevin Sullivan, Novak beat Borelli for his ninth tally of the season.

Brown got a power play at 6:19, and Grosenick made a low glove save on a Matt Lorito shot at the top right circle. But with 21 seconds left on the man advantage, Brown got on the board. Dennis Robertson’s shot from the right point went through a crowd and screen in front at 7:57 for his third of the season.

In the final four minutes there were chances on both ends. Brown’s Joe Prescott got a pass on the left circle from Garnet Hathaway on a two-on-one and his drive was just wide of the right post. With 1:23 left, Nick Lappin got in close to the left of Grosenick and the goalie came up big on a high right shoulder stop. Shots in the second period were 14-12 Union and 22 for Brown, 21 for Union.

At 5:28 of the third period, Brown got a power play and pressured, with the best chance coming on a drive from the left point by Matt Wahl that was stopped by Grosenick. Similar to the start of the game, the third period featured limited chances in a fast paced period, with Brown having just five shots and Union one with 6:01 left in the period.

The third period shots were 11-1 Brown and the final shots were 33-22 Brown. Grosenick was steady in keeping Brown at bay in the final stanza. He stopped 32 and Borelli made 19 saves.

ECAC Journal: Samuels-Thomas never foresaw his fortune

Jordan Samuels-Thomas had two rules when he shopped around for a new college in the spring of 2011 after spending two frustrating seasons at Bowling Green.

Samuels-Thomas didn’t want to be part of another rebuilding project after seeing the Bowling Green program go through two coaching changes in his two seasons. Second, Samuels-Thomas wanted to find a school close to his home in Windsor, Conn.

Samuels-Thomas decided on Quinnipiac, a school 40 minutes from his hometown. Coach Randy Pecknold gave Jordan-Thomas his assurances, despite the team’s seventh-place finish in ECAC Hockey in 2010-11, the Bobcats would compete for conference championships soon.

Less than two years later, Quinnipiac (18-3-3 overall, 11-0-1) is in the hunt for a national championship, currently boasting the longest unbeaten streak in NCAA Division 1 at 17 games (15-0-2). In the most recent Pairwise rankings, Quinnipiac is the top-ranked team in the nation.

“Honestly, I wanted to be on a team that was ranked,” Jordan-Thomas says. “But being part of this, I couldn’t have foreseen that. I knew we had a good team that would compete for championships. We’ve been on quite a roll. We’re put together so well, and we’re so well coached. But I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t surprised by our success.”

Samuels-Thomas is a perfect example of Quinnipiac’s success story. After leading Bowling Green in points as a freshman and sophomore, he has accepted a lesser role after a redshirt season last winter. The redshirt junior has recorded seven goals and five assists in 24 games, spending most of his time on the third line. He ranks fourth on the team in points behind senior captain Jeremy Langlois (11-12-23), senior forward Clay Harvey (3-12-15) and sophomore forward Matthew Peca (7-7-14).

“When I talked to Coach Pecknold before I came here, he walked me through the foundation of the program,” Samuels-Thomas says. “He talked about Peca, who would be there when it was my turn to start playing. It seemed like we’d be a team that would catch people by surprise. It made sense to me.”

Quinnipiac started the season with a record of 3-3-1 in its first seven games. Its losses came against Robert Morris, Colgate and American International. After spending a year off the ice on game day, Samuels-Thomas struggled to find his rhythm.

“Last year was a tough year because I wanted to contribute,” Samuels-Thomas says. “All the games I played before Christmas this year were all over the map. I figured out my game after Christmas break, and as a team, we learned we have to play our best game no matter who we play.”

All 10 of Quinnipiac’s remaining regular-season games will be played against ECAC opponents.
The Bobcats are perfect in league play thus far this season – a trend Samuels-Thomas expects to continue.

“I think we go into every weekend wanting four points,” Samuels-Thomas said “If we pay attention to the details, we know everything we do will contribute to whether we win or lose. The small details need to be taken care of first, and the bigger things will come.”

The No. 1 team in the nation in the Pairwise Rankings, Quinnipiac, will put its NCAA-best 17-game unbeaten streak on the line Saturday in a battle with the Bulldogs, who currently sit in a tie for fifth in the Pairwise Rankings. Yale has also been strong of late. The Bulldogs had a five-game winning streak snapped last weekend in a loss to Colgate.

Union hockey has received a verbal commitment from Governors Academy center Ryan Scarfo for the 2014-15 season.

Scarfo, 18, had 15 goals and 14 assists in 29 games last season.

U.S. Hockey Report said that Scarfo is best known for his shot, and has a great release and accuracy to match. USHR believes Scarfo should be one of the most dangerous players in prep hockey this season.

“He has a ton of upside,” Governor’s coach Leon Hayward told USHR. “This is a tribute to [Union coach] Rick Bennett and his staff, who have been following him for a long time. When they made the offer, Ryan didn’t have to think long before taking it.”
